Last night, over 3,200 fans enjoyed a close game between the Tucson Sidewinders and the Fresno Grizzlies on a beautiful night for baseball. Adam Bass gave up only one run in the first inning and Fresno was unable to score again until the sixth. Perhaps that’ll be the end of the “trend” I mentioned in yesterday’s posting about giving up big innings early. One can hope! Dana Eveland returned to the Winders and pitched three innings of relief, also giving up one run on five hits. Today’s paper said Manager Bill Plummer thought Dana looked rusty after sitting in the D-Backs bullpen watching others pitch big league games for a couple of weeks, but I’m still impressed with his results…AND his enthusiasm to rejoin the Winders. Demoted players have up to 72 hours to report to Tucson…Dana showed up immediately and wanted to pitch. Good on him! Plummer will apparently put Dana back in the starting rotation and move Adam Bass into the bullpen.
Our boys seemed as baffled by Fresno pitching last night as they were by ours. Chris Carter and Alex Romero each had two hits, but it was Jamie D’Antona’s two-out home run in the bottom of the ninth that got all the attention and tied the game up, 2 to 2. Bill Murphy came in to pitch the 10th for Tucson and unfortunately gave up a huge line-drive homer to Fresno’s first batter in the 10th, Nathan Schierholtz. Fresno scored one more run in the 10th to pull ahead by two. Tucson made the bottom of the 10th very interesting, but with the winning run on base, Alex Romero flied out to centerfield and the game ended with a sigh. Final score: Fresno 4, Tucson 2.
Transaction Updates. Today’s paper reports that Brian Barden is already back with the Sidewinders, having been optioned to Tucson to make room on the D-Back roster for Micah Owings. But that doesn’t explain why Dana Eveland is back with us (since usually it’s a one-for-one swap and I thought Dana came back in the Micah move). The D-Backs’ website doesn’t provide further illumination, so I’ll just remain baffled.
There are times when I’m happy to see a transaction occur in another team - usually if I think the move will help the Winders. Such is the case with the move yesterday that promoted Fresno pitching sensation Tim Lincecum to the Giants, in place of Russ Ortiz who went on the DL. I’ll be a lot happier hearing about Tim’s successes when he’s not tearing up the PCL!
PCL Standings. The Sidewinders remain in the Southern Division basement with their series loss to Fresno. Tonight the Winders play the team with the best record in the PCL: Southern Division powerhouse, Sacramento River Cats (Athletics) in Sacramento. You can catch the game on the Winders official website, or by listening to local COOL 1450AM with Ryan Radtke. First pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
